SSP delivers state-of-the-art Oakleigh VCAT

SSP has delivered a new state-of-the-art venue for the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in the south-east suburb of Oakleigh.

Launched last year, with a traditional smoking ceremony by Jesse Gardiner, a Wurundjeri traditional owner, this is a great achievement towards the Victorian Government’s vision to establish several dedicated VCAT community-based venues in metropolitan Melbourne that improve access to justice for local communities and handle more cases through enhanced digital technologies.

SSP, in collaboration with its accommodation service delivery partner Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), worked closely with Court Services Victoria (CSV) and VCAT to deliver a fit for purpose venue on time and within budget.

About the new VCAT venue

Based on human-centred design principles and the client’s brief, this new venue is less formal than a courthouse, aiming to be more welcoming and accessible to the public. It was also important that the spaces could be used flexibly for discussions, mediations and hearings.

The new innovative fit-out also incorporates digital technologies to not only enable more efficient hearings for its legal facilitators and the public, but also to future-proof the venue.

Key features of the space include:

  • state-of-the-art technology to support digital evidence presentation and video-conferencing
  • remote witness facilities to support vulnerable users
  • space for support services, including areas for private discussions; and
  • mediation and hearing rooms that are culturally appropriate for Koori community members.

This is the Tribunal’s first designated Koori hearing room, which aims to provide a culturally safe space for Koori community members to have their disputes resolved.

SSP and JLL’s accommodation program expertise ensured the space fully considered and met the client’s brief while keeping a keen eye to the project’s governance and management at all stages.

Success with the VCAT venues continues

Oakleigh was the first of several new VCAT locations for metropolitan Melbourne. Following its success, the Frankston and Bundoora VCAT venues have now been completed. The new VCATs are designed to improve access to justice and deliver a supportive, welcoming place where people can resolve their cases.
