In May 2021 the Victorian Government released Victoria’s Climate Change Strategy and the Whole of Victorian Government emissions reduction pledge. As part of this pledge, the Government has committed to 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2025 for all Victorian Government operations, facilities and services, from schools and hospitals to police stations and metro trains.

While the Victorian Government is currently assessing the best options for achieving this commitment in 2025, purchasing GreenPower is an option that Government departments and agencies can take now to reduce their emissions in the interim.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning are forging ahead

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has taken a lead in obtaining GreenPower for its premises to achieve its own 2021 target for net-zero electricity emissions.

SSP, together with its accommodation service delivery partner, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), recently converted all DELWP energy accounts to a default position of 100 per cent GreenPower with immediate effect.

Why we are doing it

Electricity is the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions across the Victorian Government, making up approximately 72 per cent of all emissions from government operations. Switching to GreenPower is a simple and effective way for many Government departments and agencies to reduce their emissions.

Benefits of GreenPower

The minimal cost increase for switching to GreenPower would allow the Victorian Government office accommodation portfolio to potentially abate over more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2-e emissions per annum [1]. This is equivalent to 33,333 cars not being driven every year [2]. This switch would make substantial strides in meeting individual Government department/agency targets.

How SSP can support our clients to make the switch

SSP is encouraging all Victorian Government departments and agencies to follow DELWP’s initiative and switch over to 100 per cent GreenPower. This will further reduce the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere, attributed to the Victorian Government’s operations.

If your department/agency is interested in purchasing GreenPower, the table below shows the process of how to engage SSP and JLL to help move your department/agency to use GreenPower.
